Privacy Policy
Life Ring is operated by Circles Digital, Inc.
This policy explains what Life Ring collects, how we use it, and the choices you have — including our text-message (SMS) program, how consent works, and how to opt out.
Life Ring is operated by Circles Digital, Inc. (“Life Ring,” “we,” “us”), 271 Alexandra Dr Unit 4, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Questions: [email protected].
What we collect
- Account info — your name, email, and phone number, used to create and secure your account.
- Your contacts — the contacts you choose to back up, so you can reach them from any device if your phone is lost.
- Lifelines — the name and phone number (and optional email) of the trusted people you designate to help you recover access.
- Usage & technical data — account activity and provider request logs, including IP address, approximate city/country inferred from IP, browser or app information, connection characteristics, timestamps, response status, and request timing. We use these to secure, troubleshoot, and operate the service; we do not request GPS location.
- Membership & purchases — subscription, gift-license, and referral-credit records needed to provide your coverage. Payment details are entered with our payment provider outside the mobile app.
- Support — information you choose to send when you contact us for help.
How we handle your contacts
Your contacts are stored encrypted and are locked to your account. We do not sell them, rent them, or share them for advertising. We use them for one purpose: to give you access to your own contacts when you need them.
To make device-independent recovery possible, our systems can technically access your stored contacts to deliver them to a recovery session you initiate. We are honest about this: we do not claim we are unable to access your data. We restrict that access to operating the recovery feature, log sensitive actions, and never use your contacts for any other purpose.
Text messages (SMS)
Life Ring uses text messages in two distinct ways, and we want to be precise about which texts come from you and which come from us.
Lifeline invitations — sent by you
When you add someone as a lifeline, the app prepares the invitation and opens your phone’s own messaging app so that you send it from your own number — like any other text to a friend. Life Ring’s systems do not send these invitations and do not text anyone simply because you typed their number.
Recovery alerts and delivery checks — sent by Life Ring
If you are locked out and start a recovery, Life Ring sends a one-time text to the lifelines who have accepted your invitation, with a link to help you regain access. The owner may also request a delivery-check text to an already accepted lifeline. A person consents to these recovery alerts and delivery checks when they accept your invitation; only accepted lifelines are ever texted by us, and we send marketing or promotional texts to no one.
Sample message (sent by Life Ring)
Alex, someone is trying to recover their Life Ring account and listed you as a lifeline. If this is expected, tap to help: https://lifering.help/lifeline/grant?…
Message frequency varies and depends on recovery requests and owner-requested delivery checks. Message and data rates may apply.
Opt-out (STOP) and help (HELP)
Anyone can reply STOP to any Life Ring text to stop receiving messages, or HELP for help. Replying STOP opts that number out of further Life Ring texts. For help you can also contact [email protected].
We do not share your mobile information
We do not sell or share mobile phone numbers or SMS consent with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. Phone numbers are used solely to deliver the lifeline and recovery messages described above. We may share data with service providers (for example, our SMS delivery vendor) only as needed to send these messages on our behalf.
How we use your information
- To provide the service: back up your contacts and enable device-independent recovery.
- To secure your account and notify you of sensitive activity (such as a recovery attempt).
- To send the recovery alerts described above when you start a recovery.
- To provide membership and gift coverage, and email you about trial expiry and subscription options. These membership emails are separate from the recovery-only SMS program.
- To comply with legal obligations.
Sharing
We share data only with service providers who help us run Life Ring (such as hosting, email, and SMS delivery), bound to use it only for that purpose; or when required by law. We do not sell your personal information.
Your choices & rights
You can view your contacts and delete your account from the app. Deleting your account removes your backed-up contacts, lifelines, and account activity. To request deletion without the app, follow our account deletion instructions. Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA; to exercise them, contact [email protected].
Data retention & security
We retain your account data while your account is active. Account deletion removes your backed-up contacts and account-owned records from the live service. Payment and bulk-order records may remain for accounting, fraud prevention, and legal obligations; deleting an account does not automatically cancel an external subscription. Hosting, email, and payment providers may retain logs or backups under their retention policies. Contact support for help with cancellation, retained records, or deletion requests to service providers. We protect data with encryption and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, but recovery sessions are read-only, time-limited, and revocable.
Children
Life Ring is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
We will update this policy as the service evolves and revise the “last updated” date above.
